How to play Paperthrow

Paperthrow is a paper toss game. You sit at a school bench with a crumpled paper ball. There is a bin by the teacher's table and a ceiling fan somewhere between you and it. Swipe up to throw. Get the target number of balls into the bin before the bell and the next stage opens. Eighteen stages, free, in your browser.

The flick

Put a finger on the ball and swipe up towards the bin. Let go to throw.

  • A longer swipe throws farther. A short swipe drops the ball short of the bin.
  • Swipe a little left or right and the throw bends that way. A straight swipe goes straight.
  • How fast you swipe does not matter. Only how long, and which way.

The first time you play, the room gives you a warm-up with no clock and no score. Use it to find the swipe that reaches the bin. Then keep that swipe.

The fan

When the ceiling fan is on, it pushes the ball sideways while it flies. The board tells you the fan's side and speed before every throw.

Speed 2 is a gentle push. Speed 3 is steady and moves the ball more. The farther the bench, the longer the ball is in the air, and the more the fan gets to do.

Two seats

You can throw from the left seat or the right seat of the bench. The bin does not move. Your angle to it does. Switch seats from the button at the top of the room. Most people find one seat feels right and stay there.

The stages

Each stage asks for a number of balls in the bin inside a time. Reach it and the next stage opens. Miss it and you play the same stage again. Nothing is lost by missing.

In the corridor the bin moves. Make the number the board asks for at one spot and it rolls to the next: farther down, then to the doorway side or the railing side. Same swipe for distance, new angle for the side. From stage 17 a breeze pushes the ball sideways at some spots.

Points and streaks

Every ball in the bin scores. Balls in a row score more.

In a rowEach ball is worth
1 to 410 points
5 to 920 points
10 to 1930 points
20 and up40 points

When you cross into a new band, every ball in the streak so far is repriced at the new rate. So the fifth ball in a row is not worth 20. It is worth 20, plus 10 more for each of the four before it. A miss banks what you have and starts a fresh streak at 10.

Your best score, most in the bin and longest streak are kept for every stage. Clear a stage and you join the class board.

Practice

Practice is separate from the stages and never touches your records. Pick any bench, either seat, and any fan. Then choose 50 balls with no clock, or a timed round. Use it to learn a fan speed before the stage that needs it.
